Emerald Lake Lodge | Canadian Rockies
You’ve maybe heard of Lake Louise and the Fairmont Chateau right on the water’s edge; but for me personally – it’s busy, crowded (and expensive).
Instead, my favourite is Emerald Lake Lodge – just 35 minutes away. I’ve booked clients to stay here for years, and now, having had the chance to stay here myself, it was an absolute highlight! We only had a one night stay, in August 2025, which was sufficient – but I’d recommend maximising your time by arriving early and leaving late.
I’m sure you’re not surprised why it gets its name, with only 80-odd rooms, all in cabin-style buildings and surrounding the stunning lake. It’s still a bit busy with travellers during the day (soooo much less than Lake Louise though!), but once you get away from the main viewing point, you have the place to yourself. I found a quiet spot, popped my feet in the water and took in the view. The most you could hear was the canoes being paddled across the water….
You can hire a canoe right at the start of the lake loop if you have the time.
S’mores before dinner, and maple whiskey around the fire after. Dinner at the Mount Burgess room was lovely (TIP: make a reservation in advance). And then a sunrise walk to see the still water, the sun coming across the mountains, and take a final moment at this special place.
Both Travelmarvel and Emerald Tours stay here on some of their larger group-style tours, but to maximise your time, I recommend a self-drive holiday through the Rockies deserves a night or two here at Emerald Lake Lodge. Get in touch for assistance tailoring your trip to the Canadian Rockies.
