Skiing in Mt Hutt, New Zealand
A snapshot of my recent trip to Mt Hutt, a destination that perfectly captures the essence of skiing in New Zealand.
The mountain delivers breathtaking views across the Canterbury Plains, with wide-open terrain and snow that consistently impresses. We love it so much that we go back every year or two; it’s truly my happy place. What really stands out is the warm, welcoming Kiwi spirit – from lift operators, locals in nearby Methven, and fellow skiers, all of whom contribute to the relaxed and memorable experience.
Each day on the mountain offers something special, from carving down perfectly groomed runs to pausing to take in the sweeping alpine scenery. And after a full day on the slopes, nothing beats soaking in the Opuke Hot Pools, letting the warmth of the mineral water melt away the chill.
The perfect way to finish the day? A crisp glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, enjoyed as the sun sets over the Southern Alps.
